How you will learn:

This programme is designed for individuals responsible for quality assurance in assessment, including aspiring or current moderators. It combines expert-led guidance with flexible, blended learning to help you develop and apply moderation skills quickly, confidently, and in alignment with national standards.

100 notional hours including training, practice, and portfolio development


🕒 Contact Time:

4 hours of online contact sessions spread over 3 days, plus 27 days of assessment preparation

Final assessment portfolio submitted within 3 weeks; includes a 2-hour integrated summative component


📄 Certification Outcome:

Receive a Statement of Results issued by the ETD Quality Assurance Partner (QAP)

This programme equips learners with the skills, knowledge, and professional judgment required to conduct fair, valid, and reliable moderation of assessments in an outcomes-based education and training system.

Upon completion, you will be able to plan and conduct moderation activities, provide feedback and support to assessors, and evaluate the quality and consistency of assessment processes and results. You’ll understand the legislative and quality assurance context of moderation and be able to compile, report on, and review moderation findings effectively.

Whether you're moderating internal assessments or supporting quality assurance in an organisation, you’ll be prepared to uphold national standards and contribute meaningfully to the integrity of education and skills development practices.

Modules - What you will learn

Throughout this programme, you will complete the following modules designed to build both theoretical understanding and practical application of moderation in an outcomes-based assessment system:

🧭 Module 1: Introduction to Moderation
Understand the role of moderation in ensuring fair, valid, reliable, and consistent assessments aligned with national standards.

📝 Module 2: Plan and Prepare for Moderation
Learn how to gather appropriate evidence, prepare documentation, and plan moderation activities to ensure a structured and credible process.

🔍 Module 3: Conduct Moderation
Execute moderation activities effectively by reviewing assessment decisions, verifying results, and ensuring adherence to quality criteria.

💬 Module 4: Advise and Support Assessors
Provide constructive feedback and guidance to assessors to promote quality, consistency, and improvement in assessment practices.

📑 Module 5: Report, Record, and Administer Moderation
Document moderation activities accurately and maintain records in compliance with quality assurance standards and provider requirements.

🔄 Module 6: Review Moderation Systems and Processes
Evaluate and improve moderation strategies and systems to enhance reliability, transparency, and stakeholder trust.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in this qualification, you should:

✔️ You have successfully completed Assessor Training
✔️ You have completed the Assessment Design component of your qualification
✔️ You are involved in education, training, or workplace assessment
✔️ You have a basic understanding of outcomes-based education and quality assurance
✔️ You have the literacy, communication, and administrative skills required to complete moderation tasks

What to Expect from the Assessment Process:

Your journey to certification includes the following assessment steps:

✔️ Formative Assessments:
You’ll complete assessment activities throughout the programme, including written tasks, document reviews, and knowledge checks to ensure practical understanding.

✔️ Portfolio of Evidence (PoE):
After training, you’ll compile a Portfolio of Evidence within three weeks, demonstrating your ability to conduct moderation in line with national standards.

✔️ Final Integrated Summative Assessment (FISA):
Your PoE will form the basis of the FISA, evaluating your competence in planning, conducting, and reviewing moderation activities.

✔️ Moderation Documentation:
You’ll be assessed on the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of the moderation records you compile during the process.

✔️ Certification:
Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Results issued by the ETD Quality Assurance Partner (QAP), confirming your status as a trained moderator.

Janelle Gravett

Education, training & development practitioner

Janelle has been involved in the skills development area in industry sectors such as hospitality, travel, mining, manufacturing, business process outsourcing and services (BPS & O) and education and skills development.

She has a wealth of experience in learning and development methodologies and is an expert in the skills development legislation. ​ She is an Assessor, Moderator and Skills development Facilitator and works with a number of different SETAs.​

She has been part of the QCTO occupational qualification development team for SDF Administrator and Practitioner and part of the development team for the Contact Centre manager Occupational qualification. Currently Janelle is part of the CEP team for the development of the Occ Qualification for Sales and Marketing. ​
